Tips To Enjoy Your Deck All Year Round

Tips To Enjoy Your Deck All Year Round

Other people in some parts of the world are already experiencing freezing winters, some who aren’t so lucky get longer, colder seasons. Some are experiencing warmer weather in other parts of the world while some wish for summer to end. Whatever part of the world you’re in and the season you are currently experiencing, there are several ways to enjoy your backyard or patio.

1. Make it an extension of your indoor space

Design your deck as you would your interiors. Make it as cozy as possible by adding weatherproof cushions, throws, blankets, and rugs. Steel outdoor furniture may look great but may feel uncomfortable during warmer or colder seasons, so laying on some faux fur or hides may make it more inviting and relaxing.

Use outdoor area rugs to cover the cold floors and make it feel like stepping into another indoor room wherein you don’t have to put on slippers or shoes. Outdoor area rugs are designed for easy cleaning and maintenance.

2. Invest in high-quality furniture

It's always best to invest in high-quality outdoor furniture because these are pieces that will take a beating against harsh elements. While most outdoor patio furniture can't be used in severe winter weather conditions, areas with mild winters can still make use of this type of furniture. Get outdoor furniture made with synthetic resin or wicker, aluminum, stainless steel, teak, and other hardwoods. Colorful cushions and pillows can also be brought out when the weather is warmer.

3. Add splashes of colors

Winter and autumn can be melancholy and gloomy, making it a point to throw in some pops of color like a bright orange pillow or rugs for a refreshing burst of energy. If you're feeling creative, you may choose to throw in a few neon accents for a complete pop of color.

4. Get shade from the sun

Consider adding a stylish umbrella to shade you from the sun during the summer days. Use decorative screens or panels to protect against the harmful UV rays. Adding an arched trellis or a large canopy will also cover you from watchful neighbors whose houses towers above yours.

Weatherproof curtains will look lovely in the summer and, at the same time, provide shade from the sun and insects. Other options to consider are vertical gardens, raised planters, and tall barrier plants.

5. Create a secret nook or hideaway

If you find it hard to create a year-round deck, try creating a small nook or private space on your porch or patio protected from all the harsh elements on any weather. It could be a little corner with a single comfy chair and a small table or chest filled with books. Screen it off, and you got yourself a secret and peaceful hideaway.

6. Add various heat sources

Whether it's built-in or portable, a fire pit will let you enjoy your deck even on the chilliest nights. Add in other sources of heat like a electric heater or a stone fireplace. While built originally for indoors, heated floors are gaining popularity for use in outdoor spaces as well.

7. Fire up the grill

Your outdoor kitchen isn't just for summer backyard parties. Don't tuck away your outdoor kitchen just yet. Fire up your grill, turn on your stove and get that brick oven going. The heat from the outdoor cooking appliances can quickly warm things up. The delicious aroma of food isn't such a bad idea either.

8. Add a hot tub

Hot tubs are popular all year round, but the idea of soaking in a hot tub is even more fun and exciting during winter. It could be a solo relaxing retreat for you or a fun evening soak with your friends. Just don't forget to get your robes ready for when you get out of the tub.

9. Year-round gardening

Grow year-round plants that will keep you busy and get you accustomed throughout the different seasons you'll experience.

10. Add a rooftop

Adding a roof over your deck will enable you to use it even when it's raining cats and dogs outside or if the sun is burning in the summer. Add some handy lighting to prepare you for the early sunsets during the fall and winter season.

11. Enclose your deck

If you want to use your deck all year long, you might want to consider enclosing it. Glass enclosures are always beautiful and protect against all seasons while still offering unobstructed views. Screened in decks is also another way of attaching a deck during summer but will not provide warmth and protection during winter.

Sit It Out

If you live in areas where winters aren't so harsh, sit back and enjoy the weather on your deck. Keep your items covered, get the fireplace started, and bring out some cozy blankets. If you live in an area where snowstorms are likely to occur, winter-proof your deck, sit the cold weather out, and in a few months, you'll be able to enjoy using your deck again.
